The ten essays in this volume examine different aspects of the history of the Julian-Dalmatians in Canada. The Julian-Dalmatian community occupies a special place in Italian-Canadian discourse because it is composed almost entirely of people who, in the wake of World War Two, were forced to become exiles from their own lands (which Italy had to cede as spoils of war to Yugoslavia) and for whom a return to their hometowns is therefore not possible because the reality they left behind more no longer exists. This book was the first ever to be published on this community in Canada and marked the beginning of research on this industrious community of new Canadians who, proud of their origins, have also contributed well beyond their numbers to the richness of the ethnic mosaic that is Canada.
